This innovative procedure, called CustomVue LASIK, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004 and can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Created by VISX, CustomVue uses the same hardware as traditional LASIK surgery, except for the fact that the excimer laser is directed with Wavescan-based digital technology.
WaveScan Technology
With this technology, Dr. Fisher can create an individualized map of your vision based on the individual characteristics of your eye. The map is like a fingerprint of your eyeball and allows doctors to create a customized treatment plan tailor made just for you.
This technology is so precise that we can correct your vision and even the imperfections left by prior laser procedures. WaveScan technology is 25% more accurate than conventional methods, resulting in a new level of vision correction with a higher percentage of 20/20 or better vision and better night vision as compared to standard LASIK.
The Eye Center of North Florida is also the first and only eye care practice in the area to offer the latest Advanced CustomVue LASIK, in which the individual pattern of your iris is scanned by the wavescan software and used to more precisely align the laser treatment, resulting in better vision, especially for eyes with astigmatism. Iris registration (IR) allows an even more accurate result.
Not For Everyone
The CustomVue procedure is not for everyone; Wavescan LASIK surgery may not be recommended if you have:
- Uncontrolled Diabetes
- Herpes simplex or herpes zoster keratitis
- Significant dry eye that will not respond to treatment
Prior to the procedure, Dr. Fisher will evaluate your overall health and determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure.
What to Expect
A highly trained technician will take a WaveScan measurement of your eye that Dr. Fisher will use to create an individualized treatment plan. The day of your surgery, the correction information will be transferred from the WaveScan to the laser.
Like traditional LASIK surgery, the laser will reshape your cornea using a cool beam to remove tiny amounts of tissue and create a new curvature. You need not worry about the amount of tissue removed—it’s thinner than a strand of hair. The procedure takes merely seconds, and few patients experience any discomfort during or after surgery.
By the next morning, you will notice a major improvement in your vision.
