Toric Lens Implants are designed to correct astigmatism.
If your cornea is shaped more like a football than a basketball, you have significant astigmatism. Cataract patients who have this condition can choose to wear a toric lens Implant to help them see objects clearly at a distance, rather than wearing glasses.
Ideal for Astigmatism
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a number of toric implant lenses for use in cataract surgery. A toric lens has an astigmatism correction built into it. When the lens is positioned in your eye to align with your steepest corneal meridian, it is very effective.
If you use a toric implant lens, you can choose to:
- Have both eyes corrected at distance. This will give you good distance vision without glasses, but you will still need reading glasses.
- Or have monovision correction. Here one eye will be corrected at distance and one for reading.
But if you want to have your eyes working together with an Advanced Lens Implant like Crystalens, ReSTOR® or ReZoom™ and you have astigmatism, you may need to consider a LASIK procedure or another form of astigmatism correction, called astigmatic keratotomy or limbal relaxing incisions to correct the astigmatism.
When your eye’s natural lens or cataract is removed and replaced with a toric lens, the imperfections in the eye’s shape are improved. The result is clearer vision without the need for multiple incisions, which is common in other astigmatism surgeries.
With toric lens implants, the recovery time is shorter than astigmatism surgeries such as AK or LRI, and the results as accurate as LASIK.
Not for Presbyopia
These toric lenses don’t correct presbyopia. Therefore, even with these implants, you still may have to glasses or bifocals to perform near-vision tasks like reading and working at a computer.
