A cataract is a “clouding” in your eye’s lens. Located behind your iris, your lens works like a camera lens—picking up images and focusing light, shapes and colors on your retina. The retina then sends messages to your brain, making vision possible.
Because your lens is comprised mostly of protein and water, it can become clouded. Sometimes that clouding is so severe that it can prevent images from reaching your retina. Clouding can be caused by different factors: disease, injury and aging.
Cataracts may be responsible for sharp images appearing blurry or difficulty seeing at night. This clouding can also be the reason you need contacts or bifocals in order to read clearly.
Modern Advancements
Over the past two decades, cataract surgery has made monumental advancements.
Last year in the United States, about 2.7 million people underwent cataract surgery. More than 95 percent of these patients experienced improvements to their vision. Today, state-of-the-art cataract surgery is safe and effective. The comfortable procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
Diagnosis
A cataract can only be detected by a thorough eye exam, which includes a microscopic evaluation. Our team of ophthalmologists will also examine the posterior of your eye, along with your retina and optic nerve.
Surgery
Our physicians will determine whether you are a good candidate for cataract surgery.
This decision is typically based on your level of vision impairment and overall health condition. When you are significantly bothered by a cataract, surgery is often recommended.
Most cataract surgeries are performed with microscopic size incisions, advanced ultrasonic equipment and intra-ocular lenses that are foldable. Cataract surgical advancements allow millions of people to regain sharp, clear vision.
