Conductive Keratoplasty
Panama City, Florida
Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) is the first non-laser vision correction procedure designed specifically for people over the age of 40 who suffer from farsightedness. CK has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat presbyopia (the condition in which our eyes lose the ability to focus on objects at near as we age). CK is a safe, convenient and minimally invasive procedure that has been used successfully in our patients.
A Widespread Problem
In the United States today, about 60 million people suffer from some degree of farsightedness. If you have this, you know that farsighted people have trouble reading computer screens, menus, and are continually readjusting their reading materials to obtain the right focus distance. Baby boomers (those people born between 1946 and 1964) account for a majority of the population with farsightedness.

Heat not Blades
This innovative refractive surgery uses mild heat from radio waves to shrink the glue-like connective tissue (called collagen) in the periphery of your cornea.
Our surgeons will use a tiny probe—thinner than a strand of hair—to apply radiofrequency energy in a circular pattern on your outer cornea. By placing this energy on this front window of your eye, the doctors will shrink small areas of your corneal tissue. Like the tightening of a belt, this motion creates a constructive band and increases the curvature of your cornea—therefore correcting farsightedness.
During conductive keratoplasty none of your tissue is removed and no flap is cut as in LASIK surgery. Your central cornea is also left untouched, making this procedure safe and minimally invasive.
This technique works for people with farsightedness and presbyopia, but is not for those who are nearsighted.
To qualify for this procedure you must:
- Be at least 40 years of age or older
- Have a low amount of farsightedness
- Have a low amount or no astigmatism
- Have had no changes in your glasses or contact lens prescription within one year prior to surgery
The Procedure
The procedure takes about three minutes. Our surgeons will insert a few anesthetic eye drops into your eyes, and prop them open to prevent blinking. Conductive keratoplasty is painless, but some people feel slight pressure on their eye.
Good Results
For a majority of farsighted patients and patients with presbyopia, conductive keratoplasty makes it possible to eliminate your need to wear reading glasses. Nearly 95 percent of patients who suffered from low to moderate farsightedness reached normal or almost-normal vision after this procedure during clinical trial testing. Some patients though, may experience the need for additional CK treatment with time, as their eyes naturally become more farsighted or more presbyopic with age.
