Entropion Repair
Panama City, Florida
Sometimes vision can be impaired by conditions in the eyelids, rather than by anything inside the eye, such as the corneal shape of flexibility of the lens. Entropion is the term for a lower eyelid and eyelashes turning inward onto the cornea. This irritates the cornea and can damage it permanently. It also irritates the conjunctiva, which is the membrane that covers and protects the eye. At the Eye Center of North Florida, we offer treatment to correct entropion.

What Causes Entropion?
Entropion is related to aging. We are all subject to the force of gravity, and aging causes the eyelids to sag and stretch. Sometimes this stretching of the lower eyelid’s supporting structures causes it to turn inward.
In other cases, entropion is caused by inflammation or scarring on the cornea, related to an eye injury or tumor. Very occasionally, entropion is present at birth, due to the eyelids not forming correctly.
Entropion Symptoms
Because of the continual rubbing against the cornea, there can be a discharge, crusting, and scarring on the cornea. There’s a feeling that something is in the eye. Vision is impaired by the substances and disturbance on the cornea, since it reduces the transparency required for light to pass through. If the condition goes untreated for too long, corneal damage can be permanent.
Treatment of Entropion
Temporary relief can be obtained from artificial tears, and some people find it helpful to tape the lower eyelid down, away from the cornea. Medications may also be prescribed to help control the inflammation and treat any infection. However, surgery is the only way to provide durable relief.
The surgical procedure tightens the eyelid and restores its normal positioning. Scar removal might also be necessary and sometimes a tissue graft. Your eye surgeon at the Eye Center of North Florida would give you a thorough examination and discuss the various options with you.
