Florida's First LenSx Custom Cataract Laser

LenSx Laser - Putting the Future in MotionThe nine physicians of The Eye Center of North Florida are the group of doctors that are responsible for the introduction of this new technology into our area. There are only 25 of these lasers in the world, 15 in the nation, and The Eye Center is the first practice to have one in the state of Florida. Dr. Bret Fisher and Dr. Paul Garland, both surgeons at The Eye Center, look forward to using this new technology for their patients and revolutionizing the way cataract surgery is performed.

With the impressive technological advancements that are made daily to improve our lives and restore our good health it is difficult to imagine that cataract surgery has been performed the same way for years – until now! The cloudy and distorted vision cause by cataracts can now be restored with a quick, bladeless surgery.

The LenSx allows precision that is unmatched by the traditional cataract surgery performed by hand. Guided by the operating surgeon, the LenSx Custom Cataract System uses two new technologies that together create the controlled accuracy you expect from the experts in eye care. With optical coherence tomography (OCT), the surgeon is able to view the eye’s 3-D anatomy. OCT enables the surgeon to program and perform a comprehensive, computer-controlled surgical procedure. Also, using the first FDA approved femtosecond cataract laser to be used in the eye, Dr. Garland and Dr. Fisher are able to provide better lens positioning of the replacement lens implant and provide a more gentle surgery. These technologies allow three of the most important parts of cataract surgery (the anterior capsulotomy, corneal incisions, and lens fragmentation) to be accomplished safely and accurately before the patient even enters the operating room.

Although cataracts are common, your eyes are not, and therefore your surgery should be customized for your eyes. This fully integrated laser platform enables Dr. Garland and Dr. Fisher to plan surgery based their patients’ unique anatomy. This custom approach allows the surgeon to correct astigmatism, a condition in which the surface of the eye is shaped irregularly, causing problems with focusing. The LenSx laser is used for those patients with low amounts of astigmatism. Patients with high amounts of astigmatism need a Toric intraocular lens, but the lens only corrects in half-diopter steps while the LenSx can make further adjustments.

This bladeless laser cataract surgery is completed in only 15-20 minutes. It begins with an incision on the cornea of the eye. The incisions made by the laser are self-sealing, eliminating the need for suturing. The laser then creates an opening around the eye’s lens. This process is called capsulorhexis, and only 10% of manual capsulorhexi can match the accuracy of the LenSx Laser. The next critical step in this surgery is to divide the lens into smaller sections that are easier to remove. The LenSx achieves this division flawlessly while protecting the delicate fibers that hold the lens in place. The doctors at The Eye Center of North Florida, will then fit their patient with IOLs (intraocular lens implants) or Lifestyle Lens that will be chosen based on the patient’s personal lifestyle and visual needs.

The LenSx Custom Cataract Laser allows incomparable precision. If you have blurred vision, poor night vision, are sensitive to light, or if colors appear dull or faded, you could have cataracts. You should visit your local eye doctor and have a complete eye examination as soon as possible.
