LASIK and Refractive Surgery
Panama City, Florida
Millions of people now awake to a world in focus thanks to advances in refractive surgery. If you would like to see your world through crystal clear vision, the Eye Center of North Florida is the right place for you. Our highly trained refractive surgeon, Dr. Bret Fisher can provide you the vision you have always wanted but never thought you could have.
Refractive surgery includes procedures that treat refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Though various refractive surgery treatments exist, the most popular is LASIK or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.
This procedure is favored by many patients and eye doctors because of the very few complications and lack of pain associated with it compared to other corrective vision surgeries. Most people who undergo this procedure enjoy major vision improvements just one or two days after surgery.
How It Works
The LASIK procedure works by reshaping the curvature of your cornea—the membrane that arches over your iris and pupil. Your cornea is the part of your eye that helps focus light and creates an image on your retina. The bending and focusing of light is called refraction. A refractive error arises when the shape of your cornea and eye are mismatched and the image on your retina becomes indistinct or out of focus.

A Comprehensive Solution
If your eye is shorter than average or your cornea is too flat, the light is focused behind your retina, resulting in blurry distant or near-vision. If your eyeball is longer than normal or if your cornea curves sharply, the light will focus in front of your retina instead of on it. This makes distant vision appear fuzzy. If your cornea is unevenly flat or arched, the outcome is astigmatism, which can distort both near and far vision.
The LASIK procedure uses a cool-beam laser to change the shape of your cornea depending on your individual needs. This straightforward surgery takes less than 30 minutes to perform.
See the World Clearly
After the procedure is completed, your cornea will refract light so that it is more directly focused on your retina. The result is clearer vision.
