The doctors and staff at the Eye Center of North Florida are excited to announce the addition of occupational therapist, Linda Mangun, to their practice in Panama City, Florida. Linda is an occupational therapist with specialized training and education in treatment of those who suffer from “low vision.” A person with low vision has severely reduced visual acuity or contrast sensitivity, a significantly obstructed field of vision, or some combination of all three. People with low vision usually retain some usable vision; however, it cannot be corrected with glasses or contacts. A specialist in low vision can evaluate how you see and prescribe optical devices to maximize your remaining vision. This functional assessment is an important step in helping improve your quality of life.
Even with regular glasses or contact lenses, a visual image may appear distorted, blurry or incomplete if you suffer from low vision. A low vision specialist may recommend or prescribe devices such as magnifiers and tinted lenses to help you take full advantage of the sight you do have. Non-optical devices such as talking clocks, large print calendars, and big button telephones are also popular. We actually have an in-house low vision shop, where you can purchase many low vision devices that will help you be more independent with doing tasks.
Linda’s advanced training allows her to create individualized treatment plans for our patients. Some of the occupational services we offer include:
- Detailed evaluation of visual deficits
- Visual training (eccentric fixation)
- Optical device use
- Adaptations for daily activities through home visits
- Family education
- Resources for state and non-profit agencies for vocational services
Linda's goal is to “show clients that they can remain and/or maintain independence with all daily activities despite their loss of vision!”
