Presbyopia is an age-related visual condition where the lens of your eye begins to lose its focusing power. As your natural lens thickens and loses flexibility with time, it may become hard to see objects at a distance and up close.

Symptoms of presbyopia:

  • The inability to focus on objects nearby objects
  • Blurred vision
  • A constant need for more or brighter light
  • Trouble reading menus, newspapers and books
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches

This condition usually occurs around or after the age of 40 and is sometimes called age-related farsightedness. Although presbyopia seems to happen suddenly, it actually takes place over a several-year period. Since it is a natural part of your eye’s aging process, this condition cannot be prevented and will worsen with time.

Intra-ocular Lenses
To correct this condition in patients undergoing cataract surgery, our team of physicians may recommend advanced intra-ocular lenses (IOLs) such as Restor, ReZoom™ or Crystalens.  These tiny lenses made of a synthetic material are implanted into your eye to replace your natural crystalline lens.

IOL Benefits
An IOL differs from an Implantable Contact Lens because it completely replaces your eye’s natural lens instead of covering it, like an ICL.

A single presbyopia-correcting IOL can provide what would normally be achieved by two separate items:

  • An implantable conventional IOL that restores far vision
  • Eyeglasses or contact lenses that correct for presbyopia

The Surgery
The IOL surgery procedure takes about ten minutes. One of our surgeons will make a small incision to remove your eye’s natural lens. He will then insert the IOL through the same incision. No stitches are needed and the small incision will heal quickly. A local anesthetic is necessary for the procedure, but the discomfort is minimal and the results—exceptional.
