If your upper eyelid begins to droop down and begins to interfere with your vision by blocking your pupil, you are experiencing an eye condition referred to as ptosis. Maybe congenital or caused by paralysis weakness.

This condition ranges from mild to severe and is most commonly found among older adults where the delicate skin around the eyes begins to lose its elasticity. This causes stretching in your levator muscle, which is responsible for holding your eyelid in place.

You can also be predisposed to ptosis by being born with droopy eyelids or wearing hard contact lenses for many years.
Symptoms of ptosis include:

  • Decreased ability to keep your eyelid open
  • Eye strain
  • Eyebrow fatigue from the increased effort needed to raise your eyelids
  • Fatigue—especially when reading or using a computer

Surgery to correct ptosis works by attaching your stretched muscle back to its normal location. Our surgical team will use a local anesthesia to numb your upper eyelid and sedated you with oral or intravenous medications. Excess skin is often removed at the same time.

Recovery
Most patients will need their sutures removed about a week after surgery.  Any bruising and swelling associated with the surgery should subside two to three weeks. Some patients may need follow-up suture adjustments to better align eyelid height—this could involve another trip to the operating room in less than 5% of patients.

If you or a loved one would like to correct droopy eyelids, please contact the Eye Center of North Florida today, serving patients in Panama City and surrounding areas of north Florida.  Please Call our office today and be on your way to seeing the world clearly. Nine doctors. One vision—Yours.
