ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens (IOL)

Panama City, Florida

The ReSTOR® IOL is a multifocal lens used to treat cataracts. It is made of a proprietary substance called AcrySof® which works very well with the eye tissue. The term multifocal refers to areas built into the IOL which together give clear vision at all distances. Whereas the Crystalens has one focus, and is moved by the eye’s muscles to provide clarity at all distances, ReSTOR® has a series of concentric focuses.

ReSTOR’s technology
This IOL uses a patented technology known as apodized diffractive technology.

  • Apodization is the creation of a steady transition of light by means of concentric steps moving from the center to the outside edge of the ReSTOR® IOL.
  • Diffraction is the scattering of light (as opposed to refraction, which is the redirection, or bending, of light).

At the center of the ReSTOR® lens is a point which diffracts light entering the eye, sending it to the concentric steps built into the IOL. Lens areas near the center work with vision for near and intermediate distances and the outer area focuses light for far vision. So each stepped area bends the light appropriately and you have clear vision at all distances and in all lighting situations.

The ReSTOR® IOL is made of a soft plastic and is convex on both sides. It comes folded, with two supporting arms, one on each side. Because it is folded small, the incision for inserting it is very small.

The Procedure

A ReSTOR® IOL procedure is done on an outpatient basis with local anesthetic. Your eye surgeon uses ultrasound energy to gently break up the eye’s natural lens. The small pieces are easily removed with suction through a tiny incision at the side of the eye.

The IOL is inserted through the same incision and positioned accurately. The incision will heal by itself. You will notice the dramatic difference in your visual acuity right away. Your eye surgeon will give you instructions on how to care for your eyes afterwards, and you will have several follow-up appointments for monitoring your eye health and improved vision.

No longer will you be living with dim or blurry vision, and you will have little or no dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The ReSTOR® IOL is FDA-approved for cataract treatments and is very safe and effective.
