Ziemer Blade-Free LASIK

Panama City, Florida

Did you know most surgeons that perform LASIK still use a sharp metal blade to cut the corneal flap under which the cornea is reshaped by the laser to correct your vision?

A safer, more accurate type of LASIK surgery available in this area only at the Eye Center of North Florida uses a laser to create the corneal flap without the need to cut with a blade. These lasers are called femtosecond, which refer to the ultra-short duration of each laser pulse. A femtosecond is one billionth of one millionth of a second.

Blade-Free Technology
The Ziemer Group invented and designed a revolutionary new type of  compact, mobile femtosecond lasers, and called them FEMTO LDV. Both refractive surgeons and their patients have been seeking alternatives for creating the corneal flap, which must be done in the initial step of LASIK surgery.

With the FEMTO LDV, Dr. Fisher can cut the corneal tissue with short laser pulses instead of using a blade. Some advantages of the FEMTO LDV include:

  • Smooth surface of stromal bed.
  • Smooth edges for optimal flap closure.
  • Thin flaps of even thickness.
  • Rapid healing and visual recovery.
  • Excellent visual outcomes.

This hand-held surgical laser provides a versatile, powerful platform for variety of applications in corneal surgery. The new “all-laser LASIK” capabilities are also comforting for patients who are uneasy with blades cutting into their corneas.

The Procedure
The FEMTO LDV’s laser energy is deployed from a hand-piece that is placed your eye and manually controlled by Dr. Fisher. This process resembles the operation of a traditional microkeratome. A vacuum suction ring secures the laser during use.

The three main reasons for using this revolutionary blade-free technology are:

  • Safety: Because there is no blade, the risk of certain complications associated with metal blades, are eliminated.
  • Strength: The LDV laser makes a very consistent thin flap leaving your cornea significantly stronger compared to a mechanical blade
  • Accuracy: After using the LDV laser and folding the flap to the side, the corneal surface winds up smooth and dry. This means your LASIK treatment will be more accurate providing you with better vision.
