Laser Vision Correction surgery or LASIK is a procedure designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. An excimer laser gently reshapes the cornea with computer-controlled precision to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Standard LASIK uses the patient’s prescription alone as the guide to treating the refractive error – nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.  

Custom LASIK is computer-optimized technology.  At The Eye Center, we use the iDesign® Advanced WaveScan Studio System. The iDESIGN® System uses a unique process to map the eye’s entire visual pathway, not just the front of the eye (cornea), to make sure the procedure is 100% personalized.

Step 1: Creating Your Eye Map

  • The first step is to create a 3-D map of the imperfections of your eye using eye-mapping technology that measures how your eye processes waves of light.  
  • This technology captures more data (over 1,200 data points) than ever before to measure your eye’s unique imperfections and accurately plan a treatment that is uniquely yours. 
  • It’s 25x more precise than conventional measurements, it even measures and captures imperfections that are not detected by conventional technology.

Step 2: Preparing Your Eye

  • The procedure uses an ultrafast laser for creating a thin flap to prepare the cornea for treatment.

Step 3: Delivering Your Personalized Treatment

  • Next, an ultra-precise laser gently reshapes the cornea (front of your eye) to the desired curvature, based on the precise plan created by your personalized eye map.

The best way to determine if you are a candidate for laser vision correction is to schedule a consultation. In general, you must be at least 18 years old, have healthy eyes and a stable eye prescription for the last twelve months. There are certain medical conditions that can exclude you from being a good candidate for LASIK. Some people are better candidates than others and some may be better suited to other refractive procedures. Consultations are important to determine which procedure is right for you. 

Prior to surgery, you will be given a mild sedative to help you relax. Anesthetic or numbing drops are also used to fully numb the eye before LASIK. During the procedure you may feel slight pressure around your eye but should feel no pain. 

After LASIK, your eyes may feel irritated for a few hours. You will be prescribed eye drops for comfort and healing in the days following your surgery.

There are minimal restrictions following LASIK.  You should rest the day of surgery and avoid reading and/or texting. You will also need to have someone with you at your surgery appointment to drive you home.  

Most LASIK patients can resume normal activities the following day. Our doctor will recommend no eye make-up use and to avoid certain activities, like swimming or contact sports for several weeks.

A LASIK screening involves minimal testing to determine if you have thick enough corneas to proceed with the full LASIK evaluation. In a screening you will not see the doctor but will work with one of our technicians.  This is a quick look at your eyes but does not fully evaluate your candidacy for LASIK.  A full consultation will be required.  

A LASIK Consultation includes the full evaluation, testing and eye exam followed by a personalized consultation. If you schedule your LASIK procedure, the consultation fee is included in the surgery price you will be given by our schedulers.  There is a consultation fee of $150 if you do not schedule the LASIK surgery.  

For your scheduled LASIK consultation, plan to be at The Eye Center for approximately 2-3 hours. This much time is needed to complete the special testing required to measure and evaluate your eyes and to have a full exam and consultation. Your eyes will be dilated. There will be a thorough LASIK discussion about whether or not you may be a good candidate and which procedure is right for you. 

FOR CONTACT LENS WEARERS:  If you wear contact lenses you will be asked to refrain from wearing your contact lenses for at least 3 days prior to your visit.
